Bicycle Creations: Wooden Bikes
18 June 2008
Perhaps first designed by Leonardo Da Vinci, the wooden bicycle is now more of a work of art than a practical machine. Nevertheless, it's pretty darn cool... still.

Bicycle Rim Antenna
28 March 2008

It's spring, the birds are chirping, crickets croaking (not yet) and the domiciles are being cleaned out. For some, this time of year is a time to boot to the curb all unwanted and unused items, that is, items which were stored all winter. For others, this is a time to collect! There are great things on the side of the road this time of year, and here is a great example from Alan Yates:
Several months ago I was walking home from the post office [and,] nearing my place [,] I saw it was "clean-up week": the curb [was] dotted with various piles of junk [that] people had put out to be disposed off [sic] by the council pickup. The pile outside my block of units had mostly busted furniture, but one item caught my eye, an Aluminium bicycle rim. Now, I try to ride my bike most places instead of drive, which really cuts down on the "I found it on the side of the road" tendency I have. Also, I'm not one for schematics of any kind, but this seems neat, if only to the geek in me.

Bicycles and Wines: Wine Bike Photo of the Week
21 March 2008

Taken in front of an historic home in Rome, this photo captures the true spirit of anti-doping. In fact, wine might just be the most anti of all anti-doping crusades in the bicycling world. I love it. Called "Antidoping at Critical Mass", this photo gets me in a few places: one, I love yellow bicycles, two, I always try to jam anything I can into a water-bottle cage, three, when you zoom in on the wine bottle you can see two people hanging out in the reflection, and four, I LOVE yellow bicycles. Thanks for this one, corscri!

Bicycles and Wines: Photo of the Week

Earlier today I was perusing the local not-so "dumb friends league" site for a potential friend. I found a great Australian Shepherd mix that we would probably name "Campy." You see, we have a kitty-cat named Shimano -- who we call "Shimmy," and therefore I can only see (or rather, hear) our other pet being named "Campagnolo." Shimmy, Campy, it all stands to reason, yeah? Speaking, then, of brilliantly cute pups, this one is bound to make you smile, or at least wink.

Bike Pump Review: Pump Up the Volume, Pump it Up

The really nifty discount website steep and cheap [link] had a nice bicycle pump up for around $100.00 today. I thought, $100.00 for a bike pump?! WTF! Then I remembered the $10.00 bike nashbar pump I've used for a year or so and how the other, beautiful, glorious day here in Denver, CO, I broke that cheap pump in my excitement to get on those 120psi slicks after a winter of hibernation. (Well, not really, we ski all the time around here, but that's for another day.)
A five-figure bike pump (that would be including the cents, smart guy) does sound ridiculous. But $60.00 for the Blackburn Air Tower 4 ain't that bad, especially considering it will probably still be around at the beginning of next season.

Bicycle Wine Label: "Syrocco" Syrah
22 February 2008

Wine and Wheels reader, "Troy" writes in with a recommendation:
apparently winemaker Alain Graillot from the Rhone was riding his bike through Morocco, came upon this vineyard & now they have collaborated. (It’s even a tandem bike on the label!)We'll let you know what we think of it when it arrives from drinkupny.com. Thanks for the suggestion!

Handpresso: Espresso on the Go
19 January 2008
I know the name of this site is Wine and Wheels, not wine and grounds, or wine ground down, etc., but this handheld bikepump-type espresso maker is just plain neat-o. From the site:
Handpresso is at the core of the NOMADIC ESPRESSO. Simple, light, elegant and compact, it works without electricity. It has all the basic qualities to make a premium quality coffee anywhere. Handpresso Wild prepares a tasty espresso with a perfect crema. An outstanding quality obtained by a high-pressure extraction, a patented Handpresso system. “ A fine and smooth crema, subtle aromas, a structured body, a lengthy finish: a “vintage” coffee!”The next time you're touring through Laos, you can pack your crema as well.

Holiday Wine Label: Merlot Ho Ho!
07 December 2007

Yes, I said it. Anyway, here it is: Santa's Reserve California Merlot.
Sadly, it would appear that this label is still not approved for distribution:
Licensing and Regulation Division - Holiday Wine Labels: Heidi Whisman; Team Leader for Manufacturers, Importers and Wholesalers Section brought forth a request from Grape Links Inc., (a California winery holding a Certificate of Approval to ship their wines into Washington) who is requesting label approval for three wines under the Holiday Reserve brand name. They are also requesting reconsideration of the Santa's Reserve labels which were disapproved last year. Approval was recommended due to the fact that these labels are intended to be a fun and amusing way to market to adults rather than to be especially appealing to children.Ho well! You'll have to make your own labels.
Board Member Brydon moved for approval of the Holiday Reserve wine label. Board Member Farias seconded, and the Holiday Reserve label was passed. Chairman Prince disapproved, but the motion carried.
Board Member Brydon moved for disapproval/denial for the Santa's Reserve label. Board Member Farias seconded, and the request for approval was denied unanimously.

Bicycle Wine Label: Hill of Content

To protect the innocent here, I'll keep this one simple. There's a doctor at nearby facility to whom this bottle was a perfect gift for more than one reason.
He never got the bottle of wine.
It is actually quite tasty.
Yum.

Bicycle Wine Label: Bicycle Blanc

At the local wine store with a good friend today I heard mention of wine bottles with images of bicycles on the label. Naturally, I felt I could help out with a few recommendations.
Interestingly, Wine and Wheels appears in most of the top Google results. I thought, therefore, that I should continue the 'bicycles on wine bottle' theme, or meme, with a few more labels you might not be able to find in your local shop. That is, of course, until my dream comes true and I have a winery/bike shop some day. Until then, keep checking back with this link to discover new wines with bicycles on the label.
Prost!

Yellowtail to the Back
01 December 2007
An interesting article, which mentions wine marketing, at Courant.com includes this paragraph about the power of Yellowtail's label.
Anand Palani, owner of Gillette Ridge Wines in Bloomfield, says Yellow Tail customers are loyal enough that he can tuck the wine toward the back of his store. Yellow Tail fans will take the time to find it, and in the process, eyeball several other wines that they might purchase on impulse.Interesting. Click here for the full article

Top 25 Oenophile Vacations
15 November 2007
Although more a list than an informative essay, TravelHacker (it appears they are all one word) has just posted on the top 25 vacations for "wine geeks." I'll say I have to admit that there are far more "computer geeks" than "wine geeks", the latter prefer a more subtle nomenclature -- say, something Latinate, romantic, and smooth sounding: connoisseur, aficionado, or even simply taster (after all, they are the mass of [hu]men[s] who use the word quaffable). But "geek", no no no.

BIY (bike-it-yourself): Solar Powered Bike Helmet
12 November 2007

The bicycle helmet you all have been waiting for is here: the green helmet. From the tutorial:
I thought this would be a well-suited application of solar powered trickle charge panels. I only ride at night about an hour a week, so during the day the helmet can sit in a window and charge. Helmet mounted lights also free me from having lights mounted on my bike that need to be detached to keep from being stolen. It works in the rain and so far is always charged when I need it.
When you have completed your helmet, check out the world's most friendly bicycle cities. And our very own state of Colorado is in the list!

Happy #1, Wine and Wheels!
16 August 2007

I opened a great anniversary card today that has been sitting on my desk for weeks. It reminded me that this blog grew out of our wedding and honeymoon, so in order to remember our roots, here is the card, and a belated "happy number one" to Wine and Wheels. Let's look back for a while:
Immediately after returning from our honeymoon, we adopted a Russian Blue and named her Shimano because at first she was a crank and shifty. Now we call her Shimmy and Shim Shim because she props our life into a level and plumb position.
Next came winter, which in Colorado is full of fun and snowiness with minimal bicycling -- with the random exception of a 1980s Peugeot ski bike.
Of course we'll always have Florida, the San Luis Valley, California, Buffalo, and the future...
oh, and PS, the inside of the card reads: to add authenticity, I would be happy to come over and have too much to drink.
Finally, I know you are dying to know of recent additions to the clan. Therefore: Lisa commutes on her trusty trek 7000, Eric rode the triple bypass and elephant rock on his Lemond Alpe D'Huez, and after Lisa said she wanted to "lean forward and ride faster" (yeah!) she obtained a 2002 Lemond Buenos Aires. Fun fun.
